The most likely reason for your door opening and closing on its own is because the wall surrounding the door is likely leaning one way or the other. The key to fixing a door like this is to deal with hinges. Make sure the door is closed, and starting with the top hinge and using a hammer and a chisel, tap the top of the pin upwards if you have a newer door, you may be able to tap the pin out from the bottom, if there is nothing blocking it.

A doorstop applied may also be a small bracket or degree piece of metal applied to the frame of a door to stop the door from swinging bi-directional and converting that door to a single direction in-swing push or out-swing pull. It can also happen when someone pushes slightly from the other side such as a little one or a pet…. This bolt is called a latch bolt fitting, since its job is to latch a door closed and unlatch a door to enable opening it! The latch bolt slides through a hole in a flat piece of metal called a strike plate that is attached to and covering a hole in the door jamb.
