But the reason for by shock may not be what you think! In North Carolina, a 16 year old can consent to sexual intercourse, but they are not allowed to have their own nude pictures on their cellphone. Neither minor disseminated the pictures nor were these images for their own personal use.

A teenager committed suicide after her life was made a misery when her ex-boyfriend circulated a nude photo she had sent him around her school. Jessica Logan hanged herself in her bedroom just weeks after appearing on TV to tell her story and stop others suffering in the same way. The year-old from Ohio had been harassed by the girls at her school so badly she was miserable, depressed and even afraid to attend classes. Now her mother, Cynthia, has spoken of the tragic loss as she took her grief public in a bid to warn young people of the dangers of sending sexually charged photos and messages via mobile phone - an act known as 'sexting'. She was fun. She was artistic.

In some teen circles, sexting is an accepted occurrence that happens when people date or are interested in one another. In other instances, it is a one-time lapse in judgment. Regardless of the reason for it, the number of teens using the built-in cameras on their smartphones , iPads, and other electronic devices to take nude or sexually-suggestive pictures is on the rise. But what many teens, and their parents, do not realize are the repercussions that come with these choices. Sexting has some serious consequences not only for the person taking and sending the photos but also for the person on the receiving end.

A teenage boy in North Carolina has been prosecuted for having nude pictures of himself on his own mobile phone. The young man, who is now 17 but was 16 at the time the photos were discovered, had to strike a plea deal to avoid potentially going to jail and being registered as a sex offender. Experts condemned the case as ludicrous. The boy was, however, punished by the courts, and had to agree to be subject to warrantless searches by law enforcement for a year, in addition to other penalties. The young man was also named in the media and suffered a suspension as quarterback of his high school football team while the case was being resolved.
